I studied painting at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in the early seventies. I left UMass-D after two years to study with classical painter Eugene Tonoff in Providence RI. During my time in Providence, I joined Seed Idea Advertising Agency, and specialized in product and fashion illustration. In 1976, I launched my career as a freelance illustrator, working primarily in book publishing and giftware design, creating art that giftware companies produced as figurines. Several of my giftware lines sold as collectibles nationally and internationally.
Today, I focus on portraiture and nature-themed oil painting. In my portrait work, I create an image of a loved one that can be enjoyed for a lifetime and even become a family heirloom. I believe that the beauty of a portrait drawn or painted by hand is that it captures the spirit of the subject in a very tactile way. Unlike technological portraits, a fine art portrait conveys the energy of time and place, and can be designed to be a narrative of a person's life. Many of my clients choose to create reproductions of their portrait to give to friends and family. I work with them through production companies I use to make prints to create reproductions on canvas or on fine art paper.
In my landscape work, I aim to create art to help people connect with the serenity that is inherent in nature and to bring about a sense of peace in their lives. I see in the natural world a unity that quiets my mind. That unity is the subject of my paintings and what I want to share with my viewers.
